- Varsity Head Coach
Andy Guyader arrived at Cabrillo High School in March 2020 to be the head football coach with over 15 years of coaching and teaching experience. The coaching experience at the collegiate level maps from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and out to the United States Military Academy in West Point, NY. Those stops include coaching quarterbacks, running backs, wide receivers and offensive line and also recruiting coordinator duties at both schools. Notably, Guyader was the position coach for current Pittsburgh Steelers pro bowl left tackle Alejandro Villanueva for his final season at Army when he played WR. He also tutored record setting WR Ramses Barden at Cal Poly who went on to be the highest NFL draft pick in the history of the school. Barden still holds NCAA records for the consecutive games with a TD catch (20) and total games with a TD catch (32). In the 2008 season, Guyader coached the WRs and RBs for an offense that set multiple offensive records at Cal Poly. Remarkably, those WRs and RBs fumbled only one time the entire season – in the first game of the year. Also, an initial coaching stint as offensive coordinator at Pasadena Poly HS in CA yielded a CIF championship and a school-record 35.7 points per game.
A graduate of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo with a degree in architectural engineering, Guyader twice lettered in football as a quarterback while over-coming a rotator cuff injury in his throwing shoulder for two seasons. He played for head coaches Lyle Setencich and Andre Paterson. He received his PhD in civil engineering from the California Institute of Technology in 2003. He has taught courses at Cal Poly in several different engineering departments including civil, architectural and mechanical. He has also taught numerical analysis in the computer science department. Most recently, Guyader has consulted for several collegiate teams in the area of football data analytics and predictive modeling. He and his wife Brenda have a daughter Claire and a cat, Buddy. They are delighted to be a part of the Cabrillo community and look forward to seeing you at the games this fall.
